Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of QMill

Mikko Möttönen is a Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of QMill, and a Professor of Quantum Technology and an Academy Professor at Aalto University and VTT. He is renowned for his pioneering work in superconducting quantum-electric circuits and ultrasensitive bolometers, combining experimental innovation with deep theoretical insight. Mikko has published more than 160 scientific articles with over 10,000 citations, including four publications in the top journals Nature and Science. He has received five ERC grants and earned his doctorate in technology in 2005 from the Department of Applied Physics at the Helsinki University of Technology.
Breakthroughs in Mikko’s research have helped enable the commercialization of quantum-computing technologies, including the spinout of IQM Quantum Computers, now a quantum unicorn, from his Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD) research group. He is one of the four co-founders of both IQM Quantum Computers and QMill Oy. At QMill, his industrial focus is on developing commercially relevant quantum-advantage algorithms and demonstrating classically verifiable quantum advantage in real-world applications.
In addition to his research and entrepreneurial work, Mikko has served as the Head of the Aalto BSc Programme in Science and Technology and of the Quantum Technology major, helping shape the next generation of quantum innovators. His recognitions include the Nokia Recognition Award, the Väisälä Science Prize, the Innovation Professor Award, and an Honorary Doctorate from Lappeenranta University of Technology. He is also a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and the Finnish Academy of Technology.
